Ingredients
Flour – A staple in baking, all-purpose flour provides the structure and texture for the orange bars. Its fine texture ensures a smooth and even consistency throughout the dessert.
Powdered sugar – Also known as confectioners’ sugar, this finely ground sugar adds a delicate sweetness and smooth texture to these orange bars. It is essential for achieving that delectable melt-in-your-mouth quality.
Salt – A pinch of salt may seem small, but it plays a crucial role in balancing the sweetness and enhancing the flavors of the orange bars. It adds depth and complexity to the overall taste.
Butter – Unsalted butter provides richness and a buttery flavor to the crust of the orange bars. Its creamy texture helps bind the ingredients together, creating a tender and crumbly base.
Orange zest – The vibrant orange zest brings a burst of citrusy aroma and flavor to the bars. It is the zest that contains the essential oils, which infuse the dessert with a tangy and refreshing note.
Sugar – Granulated sugar sweetens the filling of the orange bars, balancing the tartness of the orange juice. It adds just the right amount of sweetness to complement the zesty flavors.
Eggs – Eggs act as a binder, adding structure and moisture to the bars. They contribute to the smooth and velvety texture, giving the dessert a rich and satisfying consistency.
Orange juice – Freshly squeezed orange juice brings the star ingredient to the forefront, infusing the bars with bright citrus flavors. It provides a refreshing tang that elevates the overall taste experience.
Tips for recipe success
- When grating the orange zest, be careful to only grate the bright orange outer layer. The white pith can impart a bitter taste to the bars.
- Roll the oranges gently on the countertop before juicing them. This will help release the maximum amount of juice from the fruit.
- To ensure a smooth batter, bring your eggs to room temperature before incorporating them into the recipe. This helps in achieving a uniform texture.
- Allow the orange bars to cool completely before cutting them into squares. This will help them set properly and ensure clean and neat slices.
